“The nature of our customers has been changing. Whereas historically, you might have designers that just did design, we’re increasingly seeing that designers working on websites and other Web applications are learning some basic coding. We refer to these designers as designers who code. Such designers understand HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, the core technologies of the Web, and they are increasingly sensitive to the limitations and capabilities of those technologies as they embark on new designs. Adobe is seeing developers moving closer to designers. A category of front-end developers are focused on being sensitive to design and understanding what a designer is trying to accomplish. These two groups work together more collaboratively than in the past."

Danny Winokur, Adobe's vice president of interactive development

When a new medium borrows from an existing one, some of what it borrows makes sense, but much of the borrowing is thoughtless, “ritual”, and often constrains the new medium. Over time, the new medium develops its own conventions, throwing off existing conventions that don’t make sense.

“A Dao of Web Design”

[t]he control which designers know in the print medium, and often desire in the web medium, is simply a function of the limitation of the printed page. We should embrace the fact that the web doesn’t have the same constraints, and design for this flexibility. But first, we must “accept the ebb and flow of things.
